40 Years Of Choice

Written by

January 22nd is the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision recognizing a woman's constitutional right to legal abortion. On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court voted by a margin of 7-2 that a woman had a constitutional right to an abortion. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun wrote in the main opinion for the court that the right to privacy was "broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy."

Through out history dating back as far as the ancient Greeks, women have ended pregnancies. The 1973 Supreme Court decision made it possible for women to have SAFE, legal abortions from well trained medical practitioners. Prior to Roe v. Wade women desperately sought out abortion in any way they could. Criminalization of abortion did not reduce the number of them.

Many women so desperate to end their pregnancies died or suffered serious medical complications after attempting to self-induce via methods that included inserting wire coat hangers and douching with bleach or lye. Many women resorted to back alley abortionists who used primitive, unsanitary methods. Thousands of women died and suffered under the "care" of these back alley butchers.

Today legal abortion in Florida and the United States is in serious jeopardy.

We should on this anniversary remember the dangerous lengths women had to take to end pregnancies prior to Roe v. Wade and vow never to return to those dark days. Women must retain control over their bodies and their lives. The extension of government and the law into a woman's private life is unacceptable and unconstitutional. No one, including politicians has the right to make decisions for women on the basis of their own religious beliefs.

Thank you to all the courageous health care workers at clinics across the country, who despite countless threats, assassination attempts, bombings, assaults, murders and harassment continue to provide safe, legal and accessible abortion for the women who need them.
