Is Time Running Out For Democracy?

Is Time Running Out for Democracy?

Our democracy is being threatened by the current administration. When I wrote about the number of worldwide extinctions, five of them natural catastrophes and at least two man-induced, it made me think about why there are people who don’t seem to care before an impending disaster. Why should they? How many people cared about global warming before Hurricane Florence caused widespread devastation or Hurricane Michael left behind the horrible mess in Florida’s panhandle. If some people believe that they will be rescued in the after-life, why should they care what happens to them in this life? I believe that humans should have more control over their lives and also care about the outcome.

Fortunately, there is a change in the direction of the wind. It’s called the midterm elections, and many citizens are planning to vote on issues that really matter in their lives. The Trump administration has severely affected four American values - immigration, civil liberties, the prohibitive cost of education, and the right of the working poor to make a decent living. Congress is so shackled in partisan politics that that our two-party system no longer seems to work, while Trump continues to wreak havoc on our lives. The only remedy is to persuade voters that their best interests are in the election of candidates who are truly progressive – people who will move this country forward, not backward. The Republican Party has been reduced to the party of Trump. Even the old guard of the Democratic Party has been mired in the politics of compromise and excessively influenced by corporate interests. We can trace the right-leaning swing of the Democratic Party back to the presidency of Bill Clinton. What happened to the New Deal and the Square Deal? But the critical values now under attack won’t be restored unless we elect men and women who care about what is morally right, not politically expedient.

This is why we must restore voters’ rights to all Americans before the midterm elections. Minorities are being prevented from registering their votes in many red states. We must protest and legally challenge these shameful restrictions so that all the people will benefit, not just the vested few.

We have a chance to make a difference here in Brevard County. A meeting sponsored by the ACLU Brevard and WFIT will present Amy Goodman of Democracy Now in discussion with Voting Rights restoration legend Desmond Meade, and ACLU leader Howard Simon. They will discuss voting rights and their restoration. The discussion will be held at the FIT Gleason Center at 7pm, Saturday, October 20, 2018. Doors will be open at 6pm. The Gleason Performing Arts Center is on the Florida Tech Campus, Melbourne FL. The website for purchasing tickets before the event is: http://www.wfit.org/post/amy-goodman-aclu-wfit.  The price of General Admission Seating is $10 in advance, $15 at the door if not sold out. Students are free with valid I.D. if seats remain available. It is critical that everyone attend this discussion. The time for holding onto our fundamental rights is running out.
