Reflections on Passage of Amendment 2
At 11 p.m. on election night, November 4, 2008, when it was clear that Barack Obama won the presidency, I was elated. I let tears of joy wash over me. I felt hope for the future. The next morning, when I read that Amendment 2 passed, I was shaken out of my elation, and reminded that I was still perceived as "different", as "less than", as "not deserving" equal rights. That I do not have the right to get married to the person I love. The feeling of hope evaporated and I was left feeling frustrated and very sad.
