What does this assertion mean for American political life and public policy? Why does this simple, seemingly self-evident assertion evoke such a broad range of responses? What are the origins of this phrase and how has its meaning evolved over time? Who are the activists, thinkers, organizers, writers, and policymakers for whom Black Lives Matter is a guiding principle?
The Spring 2021 Black Lives Matter Speaker Series will help attendees understand the contemporary web of social, political, economic, and direct actions operating under the broad theme of Black Lives Matter.
This event features Detective Marq .Claxton, Director of Political Affairs & Public Relations at the Black Law Enforcement Alliance.
About our Guest Speaker
Detective Marquez (Marq) Claxton was born and raised in New York City. He is a retired NYPD Detective & 9/11 World Trade Center First Responder. Marq enjoyed a successful 20-year Police career which included Uniformed & Plainclothes patrol in Harlem-New York, Citywide Investigative assignments in the Organized Crime Control Bureau as a Narcotics undercover for 8 years, the Vice Enforcement Division & a Detective Bureau assignment in Brooklyn. Marq also owned and operated 2 investigations & security companies. Marq is also the former Director of Safety & Security for Voorhees College (HBCU) and currently serves as the Director of Safety & Security for Richland County School District #2 in Columbia, SC. which is comprised of 42 schools and serves over 28000 students .
Marq’s commitment to human rights and social justice is firm. He is a lifetime member of the NAACP, a founding member & former spokesperson for ‘100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care’ & currently the Director of Political Affairs & Public Relations for the ‘BLACK LAW ENFORCEMENT ALLIANCE’ (B.L.E.A.). As the spokesperson for B.L.E.A. Marq is a frequent guest and contributor on national news channels including but not limited to MSNBC, CNN & ABC. Marq is a board member for ‘The Ujima Group’- a South Carolina based 501c3 focusing on providing support and information to our vulnerable youth.
Marq is a married father of 3 children.
