SCPA 1st Thursday - The 2012 Florida Constitutional Amendments

Written by

SCPA 1st Thursday Program Topic: The 2012 Florida Constitutional Amendments

June 7th 6:30 - 9pm at the Henegar Center, 625 E. New Haven Avenue Melbourne, Florida 32901.

FEATURED SPEAKER: Joyce Hamilton Henry, Ph.D. Director, Mid Florida Regional Office ACLU Florid

Ms. Henry will discuss the proposed lawmaker November 2012 general election ballot constitutional amendments 5, 6, and 8.

Critics charge the Amendments are straight out of the Republican Party/ALEC playbook.

The Florida Lawmaker proposed amendments seek to overturn abortion rulings, cap state revenue, lower property taxes, restrict court power, loosen the separation between church and state, and prevent President Barack Obama's health care law from taking hold in Florida.

The ACLU is opposing three of the amendments on the November ballot: 5, 6 and 8. This link will provide an official summary.

The Palm Beach Post provides a good, quick explanation of why people should vote "NO" on Amendments 6 and 8: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/opinion/editorials/deception-is-on-the-ballot-2311095.html?cxtype=rss_editorials

From the Palm Beach Post - Amendment 6 and how it will restrict privacy rights: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/state/florida-anti-abortion-campaign-aims-to-restrict-privacy-2295463.html

10 reasons to vote NO on FL Amendment 8 in November.
Amendment 8 is misleadingly called the "religious freedom" amendment. It is ALEC legislation to repeal the Blaine Amendment. Blaine is the separation of church and state which keeps our tax dollars from going directly to religious schools in the form of vouchers
