40 Years Of Choice

Written by

January 22nd is the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision recognizing a woman's constitutional right to legal abortion. On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court voted by a margin of 7-2 that a woman had a constitutional right to an abortion. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun wrote in the main opinion for the court that the right to privacy was "broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy."

Through out history dating back as far as the ancient Greeks, women have ended pregnancies. The 1973 Supreme Court decision made it possible for women to have SAFE, legal abortions from well trained medical practitioners. Prior to Roe v. Wade women desperately sought out abortion in any way they could. Criminalization of abortion did not reduce the number of them.

Many women so desperate to end their pregnancies died or suffered serious medical complications after attempting to self-induce via methods that included inserting wire coat hangers and douching with bleach or lye. Many women resorted to back alley abortionists who used primitive, unsanitary methods. Thousands of women died and suffered under the "care" of these back alley butchers.

Today legal abortion in Florida and the United States is in serious jeopardy.

We should on this anniversary remember the dangerous lengths women had to take to end pregnancies prior to Roe v. Wade and vow never to return to those dark days. Women must retain control over their bodies and their lives. The extension of government and the law into a woman's private life is unacceptable and unconstitutional. No one, including politicians has the right to make decisions for women on the basis of their own religious beliefs.

Thank you to all the courageous health care workers at clinics across the country, who despite countless threats, assassination attempts, bombings, assaults, murders and harassment continue to provide safe, legal and accessible abortion for the women who need them.

WHAT...Has abortion wrought. Since 1973, the massive increase of STD'S, including the deaths of millions from AIDS. The tenfold increase in teen pregnancy. The breakdown, need, and VALUE of marriage. 55 million people, the equivelant of the entire populations of Canada, and Australia never had a chance at a full life because of the irresponsibility of their would have been parents. What has God Wrought?

Choice! Is that not how a pregnancy begins? Thanks to abortion beginning in 1973, marriage has been redefined, and eroded. Since 1980 teen pregnancy has increased TENFOLD!!! Pretty impressive statistic. 55 million abortions have been commited. That is the population of Canada, and Australia combined, with some to spare. Men no longer feel the need to be married, yet men hating women blame men, and not the abortion they so preach. Those are hard statistical facts. As this nation spirals into the moral, and fiscal abyss. Cheer on my liberal friends. It will be a hard landing.

Here we go with the fear mongering again. War on women??? How about the fact there are 3 MILLION more women living in poverty since Obama took the oath of office. Not politically expedient? Just like I said a few years ago when the GOP controlled both houses of Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court, no effort was made to repeal Roe v. Wade. Could we trust a left leaning Supreme Court to protect the Constitution like that. No!!! Left wing fear mongering is used to cause confusion, and exploit ignorance from those many of whom are misinformed. Did you intellectuals know that when Obama was elected in 2008, that 52% of the voters who voted for him did not know that the Dems already controlled both houses of Congress. Just like all the many failures, diviseveness, and extreme partisanship of this administration has been blamed on the GOP. Remember the last lame duck Congress agreed to bipartisanship on the repeal of DOMA, and agreed to the Start treaty but got absolutely no credit for it.
