Gun control bid fizzles out in Congress, Democrat sit-in ends
Reuters, by Richard Cowan and Susan Cornwell, Washington, June 23, 2016 at 5:16pm

Another attempt at gun control fell short in the U.S. Congress on Thursday despite outrage at the Orlando massacre, as senators failed to back a proposed ban on firearms sales to people being monitored for links to terrorism.

It was the latest setback for proponents of gun restrictions who have been thwarted for years on Capitol Hill by gun rights defenders and the National Rifle Association.

A few hours after Democratic lawmakers ended a rowdy sit-in protest in the House of Representatives over guns, Senate Republican leaders closed a protracted debate over gun control, until at least after the July 4 holiday. ...

SCPA Action Alert!

Democrats stage sit-in on floor of the US House of Representatives, to urge vote for common sense gun control legislation.

Republicans immediately cut-off CSPAN coverage so that The People cannot see what’s happening in the House.

ACTION: Call Rep. Bill Posey in DC now at: (202) 225-3671

At around noon today, Wednesday, June 22, 2016, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives began a sit-in on the floor of the House, in an attempt to bring common sense gun control legislation up for a vote. Republicans immediately cut-off CSPAN coverage so that we cannot see what’s happening. See links below.

CSPAN has no choice but to comply with the House Republican Leadership.

The Democrats have been trying to email and Tweet photos and videos, but they are being told to stop!  The House Sergeant-at-Arms has been directed by the Republican leaders to stop the Democrats from sending out images!

We cannot remember a time when this has ever happened before.  US citizens — even gun owners — widely support improved gun control legislation, and the SCPA strongly agrees.

Tell Rep. Posey you want common sense gun control legislation, and so does most of the USA!

Call Representative Posey now: (202) 225-3671

WANT TO ALSO CALL...

- Rep. John Lewis to thank him for helping lead the sit-in: Representative Congressional Dist. 5, Georgia, now in his 13th term. Rep. Lewis (202) 225-3801

- Speaker of House Paul Ryan to tell him it is wrong not to vote on gun bill, and wrong to shut down C-Span and not let The People be fully informed and witness history. Tell Speaker Ryan you support common sense gun control legislation, and so does most of the USA! Rep. Ryan (202) 225-3031

House Democrats stage protest to demand gun control bill
Reuters, by Susan Cornwell, Washington

Several dozen U.S. House Democrats pushing for action on gun control protested on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, chanting "no bill, no break!" and demanding that the chamber put off an upcoming recess until legislation is debated.

The protest was the latest bold move by Democrats to persuade the Republican majority in Congress to consider gun control legislation in response to last week's mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, which was the deadliest in modern U.S. history.

The Democrats stood or sat at the front of the chamber, where such disruptive tactics are relatively rare. When the presiding House officer, Republican Representative Ted Poe, entered the chamber, he declared the House not in order. After banging the gavel several times in an attempt to clear the protesters, he announced the chamber would be in recess and left.

The Democrats remained on the House floor, calling for action before a vacation recess scheduled to start at the end of the week and run through July 5. ...

Democrats stage sit-in on House floor over gun control
CBS News, by Reena Flores

Just days after four gun control measures failed to pass in the U.S. Senate, House Democrats are staging their own historic protest on the floor of the lower chamber over firearm safety legislation.

A group of roughly 60 legislators sat down cross-legged in the middle of the House floor Wednesday, pushing for gun control votes. Some remained standing on the floor.
The group included civil rights icon Rep, John Lewis, D-Georgia, Kentucky's Rep. John Yarmuth, and Rep. Joe Courtney of Connecticut.

"We can no longer wait," Lewis said. "We can no longer be patient. So today, we come to the well of the House to dramatize the need for action. Not next month, not next year, but now -- today. Sometimes you have to do something out of the ordinary. Sometimes you have to make a way out of no way."
