Project on Florida Police Shootings Reveals Racial Bias

Written by

On April 4, 2017 the Tampa Bay Times released the result of a multi-year project that assembled documentation on all Florida police shootings from 2009 through 2014. They analyzed the data they collected and present the results in several ways.

The story “Why Cops Shoot” is posted on the Tampa Bay Times Facebook page.  There is also a powerful, interactive data visualization revealing the racial bias component of the shootings.  The extensive database created for the investigation is available online and can be filtered by location, date,  circumstances and other criteria. From this link to the main page of “Why Cops Shoot” you can find the story, the data visualization, the database, video interviews, and background on the project from Ben Montgomery, the lead reporter.

This is an outstanding investigative report from Tampa Bay Times.
